Economic Development is . . . (increasing the flow) of capital through the community and reducing its leakage.

2010 EDIES Story 17 of 24: Three generations ripping through the cycles of our ag economy

Goos Implement is an agriculture business rooted in an area of the most fertile soil in the world.  Over three generations they have seen their share of ag economy cycles and evolutions, and have expanded and adapted to fit the market needs.  Mark Goos of Gladbrook, Iowa explains.  Remind me – what are the EDIES

HOW WE DID IT: Goos Implement, LTD started out as Goos Welding and Repair in 1959 when Irwin (Pee Wee) Goos opened a small welding shop in Gladbrook.

HOW WE GOT THE IDEA: In 1969 Pee Wee was asked to run the repair shop for another dealer at the present location when a local investment group in Gladbrook saw the need for such a business in the community.  Mark purchased a half interest in the business in 1974 and they took on the sales department at that time.  In 1986 it was determined that a tire service would be an asset to both the community and the existing Goos Implement.  Likewise, NAPA Auto Parts seemed like a good fit and we have since added three more stores in other communities.

OUR GREATEST CHALLENGE: Knowing what and how much inventory we should have a season in advance of when we need it.

HOW WE OVERCAME IT: Going to dealer meetings, keeping up with current trends, listening to our customers and talking things over with Ben Goos, who joined the family business full time in 1992.

ADVICE TO OTHERS: Have product/service your clients need, keep up with new ideas and products; be active in your community.

WHAT IS NEXT:  We recently built a new building in which we can set up and work on the larger equipment of today.  We would like to keep expanding and continue to be an asset to the community and our customers.  We would also like to be able to employ even more qualified people than the 23 we employ today.  For more information click www.goosimplement.com.
