Economic Development is . . . (increasing the flow) of capital through the community and reducing its leakage.

Your Thinking

An avid duck hunter was in the market for a new bird dog. His search ended when he found a dog that could actually walk on water to retrieve a duck. Shocked by his find, he was sure none of his friends would ever believe him.

He decided to try to break the news to a friend of his, a pessimist by nature, and invited him to hunt with him and his new dog.

As they waited by the shore, a flock of ducks flew by. They fired, and a duck fell. The dog responded and jumped into the water. The dog, however, did not sink but instead walked across the water to retrieve the bird, never getting more than his paws wet. This continued all day long; each time a duck fell, the dog walked across the surface of the water to retrieve it.

The pessimist watched carefully, saw everything, but did not say a single word.

On the drive home the hunter asked his friend, “Did you notice anything unusual about my new dog?”

“I sure did,” responded the pessimist. “Your dog can’t swim!”

The age old war rages on between the positive and negative people.  It is often the analogy of – is the glass half empty or half full? An optimist sees the best in the world (glass is indeed half full), while the pessimist sees only the worst (it half gone! anyone can clearly see the glass is half empty).

Another type of thinking weighs in on the glass’s status -the Realist. They say the glass has exactly 4 ounces of water because they measured it. Debate over! Right?

No, not so fast. In my opinion the final thinker weighing in on the glass status hits the nail on the head – throwing down the final bit of wisdom that trumps everyone as they say “While you guys were busy arguing about the glass of water, I took ACTION and drank it!”- The opportunist.

So let’s be honest, of the four types of people which are you? Are you the pessimist, optimist, realist or the opportunist? I have been amazed by the opportunists within Tama County that are starting to make a real difference within our economy.

Everyone reading this article has the chance to come see what these opportunists have done (and are doing) on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Reinig Center in Toledo, the site of the Q2 2014 Pitch & Build.

In order for Tama County to change it will take EVERYONE realizing that they have to actually become INVOLVED. Attending the Pitch & Build 4/29 @ 5:30 is a great way to start becoming involved in the growth of YOUR County. All Tama County residents are STRONGLY encouraged to support these opportunists by contacting our office at:  info@tamacountyiowa.org or by calling 641-484-3108 to RSVP with Joanne.
